In 1948 when Feng was twenty-two, he was studying Xing-Yi (form-intent) in Beijing with Master Tien Xiuchen. Tien gave him an introduction to the Xing-Yi (mind-intent) master, Hu Yaozhen. Hu was a traditional Chinese doctor and martial artist. Before he took Feng as a student, he tested his strength (Feng was already renowned for his strength). Hu stood rooted and allowed Feng to use all his power to push him. Hu rooted and neutralized Feng's strength easily. Hu had Feng take a strong stance, and then with two fingers touched Feng and sent him several feet. Hu told Feng that he'd been training only in the outer forms. So, for the next two years, Feng studied intensively with Hu in Xing-Yi.

Hu then suggested Feng study Chen style Taiji Quan with his good friend, Chen Fake. Feng began studying with Master Chen Fake in addition to his study with Master Hu. In 1953, Chen Fake and Hu Youzhen, along with several famous martial artists founded the Metropolitan Martial Arts Research Instiitue in Beijing.

Master Feng became one of Chen Fake's top students, being know as one of only a handful that would endure the beatings that came from practicing push hands with Chen Fake.

Master Feng carries on the tradition of Chen Taiji Quan he learned from Chen Fake and has taught students all over the world. Master Feng has a large reputation for his skill in Chen Tai Chi, Chi Kung and is sought after for his instruction and mastery of Taiji push hands and applications. He created the 48 Chen Taiji form (short form) for those with time restrictions and the 24 form (a simplified less athletic form) to spread the Chen method of Taiji Quan. In addition he created a short 24 Pao Chui form for training purposes.
